SECTION II: OBJECT OF THE DESIGN CONTEST

II.1) Project description
II.1.1) Title attributed to the design contest by the contracting authority/entity:
The Final Voyage.
II.1.2) Description:
The Trust is seeking to create a world-leading museum on the Tudor Navy based upon the re-uniting of the hull of Henry VIII's flagship, which sunk in the Solent in 1545, with the thousands of conserved objects salvaged from the wreck when it was raised in 1982.
The Trust wishes to appoint an architect/design team to work alongside the Trust's team to develop the project through RIBA Work Stage C to RIBA Work Stage L. Completion will be subject to agreeing satisfactory commercial terms.
Skills and experience required will include, inter alia:
proven design experience and understanding of the procurement process of major construction projects through a Lottery route;
a willingness to be closely involved with the Trust team and their advisers on the internal design and presentation of the collection to best advantage;
the ability to stimulate the visitor by exciting concepts within a tight budget;
a proven ability to act as designer, design leader and lead consultant in support of the Trust's team;
availability of the successful candidate to be on site frequently and at short notice;
The successful team will require security clearance to work within Portsmouth naval base.

Applications are requested from organisations that can demonstrate competence in the design of museums or other similar public amenities. Suitably qualified organisations are invited to forward details of their experience and design team by 31.1.2005.

The hull of the Mary Rose has been undergoing constant conservation since 1982. Active spraying will cease in 2009 to be followed by 5 years of drying out during which time work can be undertaken to build a museum around the ship which sits in a dry dock which is a listed building. Even when the hull is dry the environmental controls needed to conserve the wooden hull are very stringent and will need to be fully addressed and understood by the design team. The aim is for there to be no physical barrier between visitor and hull and about 400 000 visitors a year can be anticipated. Minimum disruption to visitors during the building process will be expected. It is intended to open the museum in 2011, the five hundredth anniversary of the maiden voyage of the Mary Rose.
Candidates will be expected to restrict their initial presentations to a maximum of six A-1 boards.
